Wheel info, warranty voided with aftermarket

I just this email from my DA (what does DA stand for?)

The Lucid Air 19” Aero Range wheel has a wheel width of 8” and will accept 5-lug 120mm bolt pattern wheels with a 64mm hub.

• The 19” Aero Range wheels come with Pirelli P ZERO All-Season, LM1: 245/45R19 102Y XL​
• The 19” wheel can also support Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3, LM1: 245/45R19 102V XL​
• Lucid only endorses the 19” tire option as it was thoroughly tested​

Wheels for the Lucid Air have been specifically designed for higher EV weight and aerodynamics and range and performance may be reduced with installation of aftermarket wheels or tires.

Keep in mind that Lucid Motors does not recommend aftermarket parts or wheels and your Lucid Air warranty may be affected should any damage occur as a result of an aftermarket product or non-Lucid certified service or installation.

There goes my plan of aftermarket wheels. I can't risk the warranty, because they could say we can't rule it out. Are you going to risk it?

I think if aftermarket wheels are the cause of a warranty issue ( like wheel offset being incorrect causing the inside of the wheel to make contact with brake or suspension components that then fail) then a manufacturer can reject a warranty claim. They aren’t allowed to reject a claim that is unrelated to wheels though- if the battery fails for example they can’t say it was due to wheels and just deny the warranty claim.

This is no different of a response from any manufacturer. Nothing new here.

Again, this is true for every product that is not original oem or authorized; so like 99% of all aftermarket parts/accessories.

Under the Magnusson Moss Warranty Act the burden of proof is on the manufacturer. If you were to experience a battery issue that would fall under Lucid’s warranty coverage and they deny, claiming the aftermarket wheels may have been the cause, they would need to be able to prove that, not just conjecture. I can’t see how they would (it would be a pretty silly claim unless you were running wheels made of lead or something)

Taking this approach would damage the brand, but if they did you would obviously have to deal with the hassle and cost of fighting them, which may be a risk you don’t want to take.

I would see the main risk of aftermarket wheels being the consumer becomes responsible for verifying the wheel will fit correctly, has suitable load ratings, has the appropriate testing and certifications, is from a reputable company etc… all things the car manufacturer is typically responsible for. If something is not right there could obviously be risk of damage and safety concerns.

As for costs, each set was from a separate manufacturer through allibaba, All in including shipping to my door, one set costs $2200. And the other right at $2000. They aren’t mounted yet, not even here yet, (just about to be shipped ) I’ve done this two times before with great results, it takes around 4 full months start to finish so you can’t be in a big hurry. Mounting will cost +-$150. and I may need to buy a set of sensors.

Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act:
Legally, a vehicle manufacturer cannot void the warranty on a vehicle due to an aftermarket part unless they can prove that the aftermarket part caused or contributed to the failure in the vehicle (per the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act (15 U.S.C. 2302(C))

Agreed. Since you got these wheels made could you share the specs? Bore offset thickness? There is conflicting info from diff lucid service centers. Thanks so much

Here are all of the specs for the 19”, I think they will be perfect but I must caution you that I don’t have them yet, so I can’t guarantee they will be correct first hand, I’ll have them in about 30 more days, which is what it takes to ship, they’re leaving China now. Included is a short video of them actually being made.
