I am heading out on a road trip from Phoenix to Yellowstone. We will stop in Ogden overnight on the way up. I am currently planning to charge at EA in Flagstaff, CircleK in Page, (avoid Chargepoint in Kanab), Ionna in Beaver Utah and then Ogden. I will post some efficiency and charging notes as we go.

It does not look like there is much charging in Yellowstone Park. We will be staying at Old Faithful. I see a couple of broken destination chargers there but nothing else around Old Faithful. Does anyone have experience there? It looks like the closet DC fast charging is Rivian in Gardiner, West Yellowstone has Tesla but that site is restricted to Tesla only. Are there any options that I am missing?
 
Other than 14-50 outlets at nearby campgrounds, Yellowstone is a charging desert. And one of the reasons I started looking at Lucid years ago.
 
Below is a summary of our recent Gravity trip from Phoenix to Yellowstone to St George to Zion and back to Phoenix. I will do three posts, one for the drive to Yellowstone, one for getting around Yellowstone and one for the return trip to Phoenix.


Drive to Yellowstone

We decided to overnight in Ogden a the way to Yellowstone. The route was Phoenix, Flagstaff AZ, Page AZ, Kanab UT, Beaver UT and Ogden Utah. The weather went from sunny and 95 degrees to rain and 50 degrees with significant headwinds.

Phoenix to Flagstaff
The drive from Phoenix to Flagstaff has 6500 feet of elevation gain, the winds and temperature were ideal. We left home with 95% SOC and navigation predicting 40% SOC at EA in Flagstaff. We arrived with 38% SOC and dynamic efficiency showing 2.64 m/kWhr. Since the weather was ideal with little wind, I attribute the 2% discrepancy to a week’s worth of added weight for beverages, food and luggage. Charging at EA in Flagstaff was good. Gravity pulled 173kW at 38% and still taking 121kW at 80% SOC. I do not remember the charging time, but it was enough for restroom, refilling drinks, tossing some trash and a refreshing 5 minute walk.

Flagstaff to Page
We chose to charge at Circle K in Page rather than Kanab because the Kanab chargers had a very poor Plugshare rating. Plugshare showed two of four chargers (each charger has two ports with load sharing) in Page not working so we took on enough electrons in Flagstaff to easily make Kanab if needed. Navigation predicted 50% SOC at Page which was spot on when we arrived in Page. Dynamic efficiency was 3.00 mi/kWhr. Two of the four chargers were indeed not working with one car at each good charger. Both cars were in the parking slot that would work for the Gravity charge port so I had to park crosswise blocking the broken charger. Gravity again pulled 175kW at 50% SOC. I charged enough so that navigation predicted 22% SOC at Beaver UT. Not a bad charging stop but I can’t wait until Ionna takes over this Circle K site and better maintains the chargers. Below is Glen Canyon dam and lake Powell. Notice the waterline after a few years of drought.

Page to Beaver
Since we had never used an Ionna charger, we chose the Ionna network in Beaver. The weather got much worse between Page and Beaver with the temperature dropping, winds picking up and some rain. We arrived at Ionna with 17% SOC, 5% less than navigation predicted. The dynamic efficiency was 2.92 mi/kWhr. I attribute the discrepancy between predicted and actual SOC to the weather, especially headwinds. Gravity pulled 388kW at 17% SOC using the native NACS Ionna connector. This was our first DC charge without an adapter, I am now sold on how much better the NACS connector is relative to CCS. Ionna needs to add some shades to this site. It is a great site for anyone on I-15.

Page to Ogden
We left Beaver with navigation showing 12% SOC on arrival to our Ogden hotel. The headwinds turned to tailwinds with off and on rain. My wife took over the driving on I-15 and drove much more “efficiently" than I would. The Utah interstate speed limits are 80 mph so I would have driven 85 but my wife slowed down to about 75 mph. We arrived at the hotel with 30% SOC and a dynamic efficiency of 3.2 m/kWhr. I attribute the SOC discrepancy to slower speed and tailwinds. I was surprised by the 12% difference given the predictions earlier in the day were overestimating SOC on arrival.

We charged the following morning at EA Union Station in Ogden. The charger was 2 blocks from our hotel. Gravity pulled 229 kW at 30% SOC with no preconditioning. The temperature was in the low 40’s. This seems like a great charge rate for no preconditioning. I like this EAS site, especially the old train engine in the background.

Ogden to Pocatello
We left Ogden with navigation showing 30% SOC on arrival to Idaho Falls. The weather turned against us with heavy rain, headwinds, colder temperatures and elevation gain. I watched the predicted SOC at Idaho falls drop from 30% to 15%. I have 15% arrival SOC set as the minimum in navigation. The route planner automatically re-routed to EA in Pocatello ID. We needed a bathroom break anyway so we liked the new plan. I believe that we could have made Idaho Falls, but temperatures in the low 30’s with rain is not the time to push range. We arrived at EA Pocatello with 37% SOC and a dynamic efficiency of 2.72 mi/kWhr. Gravity pulled 280 kW. I wanted extra electrons as we got closer to Yellowstone since charging around Yellowstone is limited. I wanted enough charge to get to Island Park chargers and then to Gardiner if Island Park did not work. There is a theme here that here that I like available backup options.

Pocatello to Island Park
Island park has the last DC fast chargers (available to non-Tesla’s) before entering the West Yellowstone entrance to the park. We left Pocatello showing 49% SOC on arrival to Island Park. The weather continued to get colder as rain turned to snow and the headwinds picked up. We arrived at Island Park with 43% SOC and a dynamic efficiency of 2.61 mi/kWhr. The Island Park Enel Energy chargers were pretty poor to say the least. Two chargers with one completely broken. The one working charger would not take credit cards so I had preloaded the app on my phone. However, initiating a charge using the app is the most convoluted process I have seen. It took me 20 minutes to start charging. Gravity pulled 174kW at 43% SOC which was nice to see. We charged to 97% so that we would have enough charge to get around the park without having to go to Gardiner for a recharge. On the bright side, Enel Energy still has not billed me for the charge. I wish these non-mainstream charge networks would maintain their equipment.

Total charging cost for the trip from Phoenix to Yellowstone, not including Island Park, was $136.96. I am sure that my old Grand Cherokee would have cost a lot more and would not have been nearly as comfortable.
 
Yellowstone

Don’t count on any charging within Yellowstone Park. There are level 2 chargers at the Old Faithful cabins, Plugshare correctly showed them as broken. The desk staff knew about them but were clueless about their condition. Plugshare suggests this is true for Yellowstone Lake lodge also. Hence, the warning about not counting on any chargers within the park. Some hotels in West Yellowstone have level 2 or level 1 charging and could be a good option but we wanted to stay within the park to avoid driving in and out of the park.

We arrived Sunday at Old Faithful Snow Lodge with 81% SOC, 30 degrees and snowing. On Monday we visited the lower and midway geyser basins. On Tuesday, we drove to Canyon Village. The east roads in the park were still closed. On Wednesday, we visited Norris Geyser basin Mammoth Hot Springs and part of the Lamar valley. Bison, elk, black bears and grizzly bears were all out making it a great day. We stoped to turn around in the Lamar valley and decided to grab some beverages from the frunk. A ranger stoped within a minute asking if we needed help since our hood was up. I explained that our Gravity was electric and the frunk was a great place to store water and pop when it is 35 degrees outside. She was very nice and I do appreciate that she stoped in case we did need help.

We then drove to Gardiner to use the Rivian chargers. We arrived with about 25% SOC with an expectation of getting 300kW. We also planned to have an early dinner at the Cowboy Grille while charging. We got a whopping 49kW with the dreaded “charging limited by station” message. I tried a second charger and got the same 49kW. This reminded me of EA three years ago. I thought RAN was supposed to be better than this. We spent a lot more time at dinner than initially planned and still had time to shop for some adult beverages to enjoy back to the lodge. We charged to 90% and arrived back at the Old Faithful Snow lodge with 82%. More than enough charge to get to Idaho falls or Pocatello on the way to Saint George UT.

Gravity is one of the few EV’s that can get around Yellowstone enjoying all of the activities without worrying about charging. This is the primary reason for purchasing a Gravity. All days were in the mid 30’s with light snow. Better weather would make getting around even easier. I emailed the lodge manager about EV charing and received a nice personal response. I hope everyone that visits Yellowstone does the same. There are Tesla chargers in West Yellowstone that are not available to non-Tesla cars. I hope that Tesla upgrades this site or someone else puts in chargers for all EVs.

Total charging cost at Rivian was $57.46.

Yellowstone to St George
My notes for the trip home are not as detailed as the trip up. The weather on the trip home was ideal and navigation prediction for SOC on arrival were very accurate.

Yellowstone to Scipio UT
We left Old Faithful with 82% SOC and drove to Scipio UT for our first charging stop. These were GM Energy Flying J EVGo 400kW shared dual port chargers. The canopy is very nice and should be standard for all chargers. A Rivian pulled up at the same time and was still charging when we left. We arrived with 29% SOC and a dynamic efficiency of 3.36. Even at 85 mph, downhill really boosts the efficiency. Gravity pulled 348kW to start and we charged to 80% in under 15 minutes. Same price as the Rivian network in Gardiner but a whole lot faster.

Scipio to Spanish Fork
Again 85 mph on I-15 South to EA at Spanish Fork. We arrived with 24% SOC and dynamic efficiency of 3.10 mi/kWhr. EA supplied 342kW at 24% SOC. Preconditioning really works even during nice weather. We charged to 80% and were still getting 144kW at 80% SOC. Another nice EA site.

Spanish Fork to Beaver
We left Spanish Fork with navigation predicting 30% SOC at Beaver. The Beaver Ionna chargers are just too nice to pass up so we elected to stop there again. We arrived with 32% SOC. I did not record the peak kW but we averaged 236kW between 32% SOC and 71% SOC. Not bad starting with a moderately high SOC.

Spanish Fork to St George
We arrived at the Inn on the Cliff hotel in St George with 48% SOC. I can’t say enough good things about this hotel and the restaurant attached to it. Great room with an awesome view at a very reasonable price. Excellent food at the restaurant.


St George
We spent a day wondering around St George and meeting friends for dinner in the evening. We will suggest Snow Canyon state park. It has fantastic short hikes with great scenery everywhere. Everything in St George is not far away so starting with 48% SOC was not a problem. It’s nice not to have to charge everyday. Gravity was looking a bit dirty by the end of the day. Even though we are not Mormon, we did wonder the grounds of the temple in St George. I do respect how welcoming the Mormon community is and how well the temple grounds are maintained.

St George to Kanab via Zion
We decided to drive through Zion on our way home. We must have driven around more in St George than I thought since we arrived at the newly updated EA Washington chargers with 19% SOC. We only had about 20 minutes of preconditioning. Gravity immediately pulled 349kW from the new 350kW EA dispenser. Good job EA. We took in 84.1 kWhr in a 25 minute charge finishing at 82% SOC. Off to Zion. For anyone that has not been there, It is spectacular.

We charged enough in St George to get to Page in case the Kanab chargers were not working. From Kanab, we planned to charge enough to get to Flagstaff. We arrived in Kanab with 57% SOC and started at 122 kW from a 125kW charger. Two of the three chargers were broken but the remaining one was working well. The Plugshare reviews were accurate about the Kanab chargers. We ended up charging to about 90% because we started wondering though some of the shops in Kanab. It is a cool little town. We recommend Houston’s for lunch while charging or for a good break.


Kanab to Flagstaff to Phoenix
It is a nice scenic drive doing about 70 mph with a speed limit of 65 mph between Kanab and Flagstaff. We arrived in Flagstaff with 31% SOC. Navigation said we could make it home with 3% SOC remaining which was too low for my comfort. Besides, we needed a bathroom break. I would have only charged to 50% SOC but it took us 9 minutes to use the restroom and get a beverage. In that 9 minutes we were already at 61% SOC. From Flagstaff we arrived home with 28% SOC. The 6500 foot descent really minimizes the energy use.

The total charging cost for the return trip from Yellowstone to Phoenix was $165.74.

Gravity was flawless for the entire trip. It is comfortable in hot weather, rain, snow or wind. Even at 85 mph, it is the quietest car that I have owned, quieter than our Air. Comfort is on par with Air, but the infotainment, driving assist and charging is better in Gravity than Air. Gravity is easily the best road trip car that we have ever owned. I can’t wait for my Phoenix to Red Cliff Colorado road trip coming up soon.

Thanks for the level of detail. Nice pictures!

The high variation when you switched drivers was in part because of the difference in driving style. Going 5 miles under the speed limit vs 5 miles over would have a big effect. Also, as you noted, headwind vs tailwind can be significant. We can only hope that Lucid will add in wind data at some point in the future.

I’ve taken a few road trips and agree - the Gravity is a fantastic road-tripper!

Driving further to get to a low SOC works well on interstates with lots of charging options. The two lane highways in rural areas between Flagstaff and Beaver have only two chargers that Plugshare show are both unreliable. If your arrive at one of these two chargers at a very low SOC and it is not working, you are out of options except for spending 4-5 hours at a level 2 charger. I much prefer the comfort of having options in rural areas. I drive mainly in the southwest but I suspect many rural highways across the country have similar poor charging. This is the big advantage of Gravity's range, it gives you options even if charging takes 5 minutes longer than driving to a low SOC.
 
Is there any reason you avoided using any Tesla SCs? Would have vastly improved your charging options and reliability issues.

Ok i understand. did not know there are so less chargers around.
In germany there are so many chargers... every few km a 300kw charger for exmaple, even in cities. So I usually drive my audi on road trips down below 5% and even 0% ;)

Exactly. In fact as a general rule, I try to leave a backup station in range just in case. Unless the target station is known to be highly dependable, or has lots of chargers. Playing the game of arriving <10% just to save 2 minutes of charging time just isn't worth it. High risk, small reward.

Every other month we do the drive from our home north of Denver to Las Vegas, and often up to Reno and Twin Falls. For the last year we've been driving our Porsche Macan EV since we have a year of free EA, but that ends next month. The Gravity takes over from there. Sounds like we should expect around 295 miles of practical (100%-10%) range at those speeds. The Ionna stations in Fruita CO and Beaver UT may cover the whole drive to Vegas in 2 stops, although I suspect the 272 mile gap between those will be a bit too much. The Ivie Creek EA in between those has been a great one though (we always get full speed there).

Really hoping Tesla upgrades the Tonopah NV V2 station soon along that Vegas-Reno US-95 route. We always have to cut over to US-395 in CA, which adds an extra hour to that drive.
 
@Adnillien thanks for the great write-ups of your travels through a spectacular part of the country. Like you, we got our 3-week old GGT for trips into places other EVs dare not venture. We are glad to hear how well the Gravity does when it’s a long way between plugs.

No reason and I did not intentional avoid Tesla chargers. I actually purchased a Tesla membership for the month to make them an option. EA, GM Energy and Ionna were all easy and would charge faster than Tesla chargers. At higher SOC, it would not make a difference. My next trip will include a lot of Tesla chargers since they are better placed along the route. I was actually impressed with how much EA has improved over the last couple of years.

The trip computer said I was at 3.11 m/kWhr for the round trip. I think that the dynamic efficiency skews lower.

Incredible pics, thanks for sharing! Road tripping these machines can be so nice. The Air is a grand tourer to it's core and it seems like the same story with Gravity.

If it were the first leg from home (starting at 100%) it would probably be no problem. But I'm guessing I'd need to charge over 90% the first stop to make that 272 miles safely (at least 10% on arrival). It's almost all 80 MPH that stretch too. But maybe it'll surprise me. 😎

All 3 stations (both Ionnas and the Ivie Creek EV) are close to the interstate exits so it may end up being worthwhile to stop there anyway. It's a cheaper EA station too, as it's owned 3rd party instead of direct by EA.
