It is also a great way for a buyer who is on the fence to have an extended test drive.

A number of years ago, when I was driving BMWs, I found a car rental company called "Silvercar". It rented only loaded Audi cars and SUVs. At the time I thought it was a great concept as one could drive an Audi for a while and see whether one liked it or not and what features the user like or disliked. I used it several times.

Since then Audi has bought the company and it has somewhat changed focus. But this is a great way to do the same thing but even better. The Four Seasons is a high end hotel chain and its guests are a prime target for Lucid. One time I was attending a small conference at a Four Seasons. I arrived just as the conference was starting; I went to the front desk and asked if they could hold my suitcase and I would register later. The clerk said "oh no. We will take your bag up to the room and you can do the registration paperwork at your convenience."

My compliments to both sides. Lucid gets a great opportunity to show off (and incidentally sell or rent a few cars) and the Four Seasons burnishes its reputation by offering this feature.

The car can continue to drive, sustaining it's speed and direction once the driver has dozed off- at least that's what my family thinks on any road trip.

But if the generation of energy comes from sources such as wind, solar or hydroelectric rather than burning hydrocarbons, doesn't that reduce pollution and CO2 production?

As long as the resources that produce those sources don't produce levels of pollution that exceed what they would have saved.

The energy payback (estimated) for a wind turbine range from 1-6 years and for a solar panel, 1-4 years. Considering that you can reasonably expect power production for 25-30 years, I'd say the answer is yes.

Well, 2 points…

1. If, like me, 100% of that energy comes from solar, it’s certainly cleaner than grid power.

2. EV’s are much more efficient than ICE vehicles and, as such also tend to have less of a carbon footprint. Not always, of course (e.g. Ford F150 Lightening likely has a higher overall carbon footprint than the new Prius)…

Even if 100% of power comes from your grid, it would still be less polluting than gasoline or diesel. According to this article, the average power supply for the US consists of a majority of renewable, non carbon sources.
