CarPlay navigation instructions in copilot screen??

I thought the navigation instructions in CarPlay were supposed to show up directly behind the right side of the steering wheel in the Copilot screen. Is there something that needs to be done in order for that to display? It’s not working for me. Does that work when using Waze or only when using Apple Maps?

Only when using Apple Maps in CarPlay.
