Audio alerts from Waze

This might be specific to Android phones. But does anyone know how to get audio alerts from Waze (or other phone alerts) to come through the car stereo? When my phone is connected via Bluetooth, the phone makes no sounds presumably because it is supposed to be playing through the car. But it's not playing through the car. I'd really like to hear navigation alerts and 'Police reported ahead'!

Waze settings, make it "waze plays as phone call"
