Lucid’s Tri-Motor Retakes Tesla’s Plaid Record at Laguna Seca

Had the interior comfort and reveal been better, would we be making these conclusions over some track tuning that most premium manufacturers will do? Would Lucid do better if they had this type of drivetrain, but didn’t make low cost tweets about a prototype with some extra nice wheels being...

    Rear Seating

In the end, it seems that even approaching $200k, may not get us a luxury sedan. As a compromise, the Plaid does seem like a better value, if not also less risky. If the backseat is prohibitively awkward in both, and equal otherwise, I’ll go with the cheapwe, faster one. But given there is...

    Rear Seating

I don’t disagree, but even had they nailed their original branding they were going to be quite low volume. There’s an ever decreasing market for luxury sedans. Now take a new, premium drive train, and a company in its infancy of a capital intensive industry. Is it possible to profitability make...

Lucid’s Tri-Motor Retakes Tesla’s Plaid Record at Laguna Seca

That’s what intrigued me about the Roadster. Tesla having tech that tackles the traction constraint. I mean, not to go completely insane on you all, but my grandkids may see a time in which cars aren’t even on the ground for their entire trip.

Lucid’s Tri-Motor Retakes Tesla’s Plaid Record at Laguna Seca

Could be. What’s said 5 years ago is quickly forgotten and clarified in print. They’ve been talking about under 2 seconds for the roadster since what, 2017? They’ve been testing the Plaid in “public” for over a year. I should say, they probably have an early crude prototype of some manner...

Lucid’s Tri-Motor Retakes Tesla’s Plaid Record at Laguna Seca

Can’t wait to get these things in a race. Not that I don’t believe they’ve tested a Plaid at those marks, but what the Plaid actually ends up doing for those that own one was not what Tesla’s “reveal” was about.

Lucid’s Tri-Motor Retakes Tesla’s Plaid Record at Laguna Seca

Stock brakes? I’ve wondered to what degree the 1:30 Plaid resembled a track car, as well as the driver.

    Battery Technology

Well then! I forget that Rawlinson has decades in the industry. I wouldn’t know about commoditization timelines, but that sounds right to me. As far range being a driver, I think that’s marginalized sooner than full commoditization. Most buyers will find 300 enough. Particularly if fast...

    Battery Technology

It’s a good engineering approach in fast moving new tech. There simply aren’t enough suppliers focused on pushing the tech forward that can keep up. But will it always be a good business approach? Rawlinson speaks to how it’s advantageous to have everything design together/in-house for...

Lucid’s Tri-Motor Retakes Tesla’s Plaid Record at Laguna Seca

Ha, beautifully said. Don’t get me wrong, I hope it’s as advertised, with a secret more luxurious redesign of the S that allows that model to have a place in the product offerings. They’ve actually been working on it since before September, but can’t show it as to not discourage current sales...

Lucid’s Tri-Motor Retakes Tesla’s Plaid Record at Laguna Seca

The EV world is small. I have to think Lucid would have a good idea of what Plaid is capable of, or at least thought they did. So, is Lucid surprised by anything Tesla announced? Assuming what Tesla announced isn’t cleverly qualified vaporware.

Lucid’s Tri-Motor Retakes Tesla’s Plaid Record at Laguna Seca

Sales numbers support this. The X too. We looked at the Y. If they offered a 80k version that has a minimalistic but not cost-cut interior, we would have bought one to hold us over until the next gen EVs are out. Punting Plaid S down the road once again, without redesign and little details...

Lucid’s Tri-Motor Retakes Tesla’s Plaid Record at Laguna Seca

That’s what the extra year is for! To design the S into performing like the Roadster. More seriously, may be redesign is coming, but they don’t want to further Osborne? Imo the S sales are so low that it doesn’t matter

Lucid’s Tri-Motor Retakes Tesla’s Plaid Record at Laguna Seca

Sigh, yes. I mean, are armrests, coat hooks, and recessed footwells THAT expensive to include? Add in some outsourced things like HUD, vented seats etc. Tesla doesn’t care imo, but that’s low hanging fruit for Lucid to differentiate themselves.

Lucid’s Tri-Motor Retakes Tesla’s Plaid Record at Laguna Seca

Maybe we’ll know by 2022. Tesla has been championing the Plaid for along time it seems. We still don’t know much other than it seemingly has been upgraded to base level Roadster performance for only 40k more than current S. I’m intrigued, although that could mean the Roadster is going to be...

Lucid’s Tri-Motor Retakes Tesla’s Plaid Record at Laguna Seca

I’m excited to drive it...over a year from now. With it being delayed by a year, are they pushing it back to put the base Roadster specs into the Plaid? We’ve been told the Founders Roadster is well below 1.9 and well over 200 mph, so there’s room. After Lucid I had expected Plaid to be...

Lucid’s Tri-Motor Retakes Tesla’s Plaid Record at Laguna Seca

A direct response? Can direct response to something not revealed? It’s faster than the dual Air, at least at what both companies are claiming. I wonder what traction assist they’re using? whether that was originally planned, or did they add that in early September? Also, this fool’s errand of...

Lucid’s Tri-Motor Retakes Tesla’s Plaid Record at Laguna Seca

Under 9 in the 1/4 mile. Basically a non-founders roadster performance for 140k is appealing I have to laugh at 520 miles of range.

If I weren’t looking to make a decision, this is good theater!

    Tri-Motor 1/4 mile

Agree, I’m likely over analyzing. However, knowing they have a better performance drivetrain makes me think they really should have had a more luxurious Air Dream trim to enhance product differentiation
