Lucid Engineer on Robotaxi Programme Leaves for Nvidia Ahead of Launch

An engineer who stood in for the chief engineer of Lucid‘s robotaxi programme in reviews with external partners on the Lucid-Nuro-Uber project has left the company for Nvidia, a few months before the service’s planned launch in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Andrew Chen said on Monday that he left Lucid on August 26 after what his profile records as two years and five months, the last four of them as Senior Vehicle Integration Engineer and Assistant Chief Engineer (Functional) of “the Chief Engineering team for the Lucid-Nuro-Uber Rideshare program.”

Lucid, Nuro and Uber named the Bay Area as the first market in October 2025 and have held to a late-2026 launch, with Houston to follow in mid-2027 from a planned depot.

That whole fantasy robo cab nonsense was never going to happen. It was right there with “licensing their software” and “upscale nurterer” phase by the prior c suite. I doubt it was ever much more than a Potemkin village for investors.

The new direction makes a lot more sense. Fix service, hire people, Cosmos.

Didn’t they mention something with Hertz once too? Hertz was going to do the service on the robo cabs? What ever happened with that?

To be fair, NVIDIA is a key partner in the Robotaxi, so good chance that this engineer will still be working on Robotaxi, but with different boss. Trying to read this move as a sign that the Lucid Robotaxi is dead is asinine.

I don’t know about anyone else but I’ve never changed jobs based on the company’s stock value.

Depending on how hot the industry is it's a miracle for someone to stay for 2 years at a place. If it's a really hot industry even 1 year is a miracle.
 
Hello all!

New owner here (4 months) and I've already been the recipient of good ole' curb rash. I researched locally and was told that because of the color and application method of the paint on the rims, it would be nigh-impossible to fix it and I would have to just replace the rim altogether. True? False? Anyone have any insight or suggestions? Thanks in advance!

In the grand scheme of things, Lucid is a bit-player in robo-taxi. Lucid is looking at some positive PR. In reality, it will at best be a sugar-high buzz. It won't domuchforLucid's survival.

If I were an engineer working at Lucid on the Robo-taxi, I would leave for greener pastures as well.

Agreed. And if your pay has an equity component to it and you're leaving Lucid for Nvidia it's a pretty easy call.

I'm not even 100% sure what Lucid is supposed to be anymore. Their (two) EV's are about 10-15% more real world efficient but that's really it. The Saphire is insanely fast but that's the halo car. Robotaxi is nothing, they already gave up on being a "licensing" company. For a while they looked like they were this super tech advanced EV company, but they're not in any demonstrable way really. So much of their stuff still doesn't work right or doesn't exist at all, and they've been lapped in nearly every category by all other manufacturers. To make things worse, their marketing bravado and former C-suite wrote a lot of checks their engineering couldn't cash, and it looks really bad. Fobs, junk HUDs, bugs, recalls, terrible service, that's what Lucid is known for now.I don't think Robotaxi even matters at this point, and I don't think this will hurt them. They need the Cosmos to be some sort of renaissance or I have no idea what they could possibly pivot to. At least the new CEO seems to be very pragmatic and sensible in what their strengths and weaknesses are.

Most issues slowly being worked at a most rectified. Simple, it’s a luxury EV with the best EV tech.
