this? I just noticed it today.

Some background. When they had it in for service a couple weeks ago, they noticed that the tailgate makes an awful "clank" when both opening and closing (I noted this on the due bill too and mentioned it to the SA when I picked it up. he thought it was normal??). the service center realized that there was no material in the tailgate receiving latch like there should have been to help quell that noise.

So as far as I can tell, they went to one of the windows in the service center and pulled off some of the 3M foam to seal it. ;) I kid, but that's what it looks like. there are 3 pieces sort of stuck along the sides of the underside of where the metal latch is. they keep getting mushed around and fall out. not good. (see pic below)

Anyway, what I'm guessing is the foam they put in there is causing a misalignment and now the latch cover is getting all scraped OR it's getting scraped because the OEM material isn't present. This section may be part of one huge, formed piece of plastic on the tailgate. I'll note it for my next service visit, but I'm not sure if there is anything they will do about it. :(

This is a $120K car, but not especially put together like one.

Could someone please post a picture of what should be there around the hinged receiving metal piece?

Yeah mine looks and sounds terrible, particularly closing (closing audio attached). My car has two thin black felt pads on the under lip (opening is normal/quiet) which you can see from the pics but I think I need them on the other side of the flap too.

heh, love the audio. (wish I had thought of that! 😁)

yep, it sounds awful. if I get the pieces in just the right spot, it'll sound rather muffled for a cycle or two and then back to the clunk.

so you've got the scrapes on the plastic trim piece too? wonder if we all do.

Well, I will take back that the 3M window foam solution from service had anything to do with the scratches on the plastic. Now that I look at both ours, it’s coming from the grooved metal piece and is just a questionable design. 😐

It's also on the list for my first service. I don't have the noise, but I do have the scoring on the plastic. The service center and my sales representative both told me that it is a known issue.

The 2026 Gravity I test drove had the same.

My loaner 2026 Gravity GT has the same.

Mine latch has the scratches in the plastic, I kinda like the closing noise though, I want some audible feedback like how a door closes.
