Level 2 EV Charger at home, for Lucid Gravity Touring - Suggestions / Experience

Hello,
1. We live in Chicago IL. We have been charging the Gravity with just a regular socket. We don't drive that much so it sort of works.
2. During winter it will be a challenge trying to charge it. It is in a garage. Anybody with experience trying to charge during winter?
3. We are also considering a hard-wired install (potentially with energy monitor and dynamic load management). Any suggestions / experiences?

I'm very happy with my Lucid home charger. We only have a 125A service so with the hot tub drawing 50A I set the dip switches to output 58A and even at that level our Gravity can be down below 10% SOC and start charging at midnight (when our rates are low in California) it'll be at 80-85% long before I leave for work in the morning. No problem charging my wife's Taycan (w/ an adapter) either. She can charge during the day before 3pm when the solar is cranking and we draw very little from the grid then.
 
I have usedthe Lucid charger, and a BMW charger plugged into a 220v EV outlet just find with my Lucid. It takes pretty much anything. I also charged my Tesla with the Lucid charger for a while too, it charged faster than the Tesla one.
 
Charging in winter wont make much difference with L2 in terms of any negatives. Hardwired is a great solution and we had the Tesla Universal charger as we have two other EVs at home and summer or winter, it worked great for all cars. Lots of other great options out there too. Check out Tom Moloughney's YouTube channel, State of Charge for excellent reviews and tips.
 
Second the idea of checking Tom Moloughney's youtube videos. Hardwired is the way to go for safety and potentially faster speeds.
Many EVSEs have energy use reporting via mobile app. Some can do dynamic energy management, load sharing, and/or charging using only excess solar.

 
No experience with Gravity. But my Air is regularly park outside in Vermont during the winter with only L1 charging. If I am able to plug it in when I arrive (after a 260 mile drive) it will charge ok even at below zero temperatures.
The first two years I had it, it would also charge ok if not plugged in until the next day. This year one of the updates (I assume) has not allowed me to L1 charge if plugged in after sitting overnight. Also this year I lose regen on the trip home if its cold out, even though its only charged to 70%. First two years this rarely happened.
 
I only have experience with two chargers: a ChargePoint Home Flex and a Lucid LCHCS. Our old summer place had a 240 rplug-in eceptacle installed for EV charging with the the car's included cable. All of these worked well. The CP has a bunch of info available through the app. I never found much use for any of it though. I got the Lucid charger through referral points, and I like the speed of charging because sometimes I forget to charge and the Lucid charger bails me out.

If I had it to do over again, I would get a very basic, bulletproof hardwired charger and call it a day.
 
Charge with a Tesla L2 charger. Works fine. Takes about 7 hours to go from 10% to 80%. 48 amp.
 
I'd been using the Lucid portable charger on a NEMA 14-50 outlet I had installed in my garage years ago. No issues encountered due to cold weather. The charger was on an external wall too so it got plenty cold during the harsh months.

Last month I finally upgraded to a hardwired solution so I could keep the portable charger with the car. I bought a charger that ties in to my home network management system which keeps track of usage and allows automation/scheduling without depending on a third party service. It's been great so far, a bit complicated though so I'm not sure I'd recommend the specific one I've got. But I would recommend going hardwired - it's simpler and looks nicer.
 
Honestly- keep using the 12v plug even in winter if you have a short commute
I have a wall charger because of the commute length
If you find yourself falling behind go to a DC fast charger once a month or so and it wont kill the battery

This is what I did for my first year of Lucid ownership in Chicago. I finally got annoyed by long lines in winter when everyone was also doing this:P The charging during cold weather was much slower to add miles both from the need to pre-heat the battery and cabin and the 40% less efficiency.
 
If a regular 110v outlet is almost sufficient then you have a bunch of options.

If your outlets are 5-20 then get something that utilizes that fact.

Otherwise you can get a hardwired 220v and just charge at 20A.

Else get the IYOLA or emporia charging stations that have clamps to regulate their supply based on your home's overall usage... With emporia being wireless.

Congrats on Gravity!!! We installed the Lucid Home charging station 3 years ago for our Air Touring. We now use it for the Gravity and it works fine with the NACS adapter. Since we had 240 volts available in the garage we had it wired for 80 amps. I’m seeing 19kw and around 80 miles of range added per hour. The other reason we went with the Lucid charger is that it is designed to handle vehicle to home backup power supply whenever Lucid makes that feature available - hopefully soon.

I live high in the mountains in Southern California. We experience winter weather, but it's nowhere near as harsh as in Chicago. However, my car is not garaged, so it is exposed to the outside weather conditions.
I use the Lucid wall charger and I set it up to operate at 50A at 240 volts. That's 12kW of charging power. I schedule it to charge from midnight to 6 am when electricity is cheaper. I have not experienced any issues with this setup. My car is averaging 4.25 mi/kWh which is far better than my Tesla Model S I used to own. This performance is since new, which now includes two winters and heading into the 2nd summer.
So, if charging speed is important to you, I highly recommend getting the wall charger. It is at least 6 times faster than a regular wall socket. (12kW vs 1.6 kW)
 
Thank you all for all the helpful comments. Will keep you posted. For the moment the Gravity is at the body shop. As I was passing a parked truck, the driver opened the door and took out the passenger side mirror and dented the door, besides scratching the passenger window. The trucking company admitted fault. The body shop has an estimate of 8 weeks. Lucid parts are back ordered. We had the car for 3 weeks ... :)

Are there any serious drawbacks to using the mobile charger as the permanent solution? We primarily drive short distances around town with the occasional 50mi travel. Got up to 60A going to a 240V ‘EV’ outlet (NEMA 12-40 I believe) and usually max out the 40A capacity of the mobile charger.

We’re in a northern Chicago suburb and garage will be well insulated along with a resistance heater for the brutal winter days.

Using the mobile charger as a permanent solution is perfectly fine. Just make sure your NEMA 14-50 outlet (not 12-40) is EV rated. Traditional NEMA 14-50 outlets are not designed to handle 40A continuous current. See StateOfCharge recharge rescue for the dangers.
 
I’d just get a NEMA 14-50 and use the cable that comes with the car. It’s not a major difference between 40A and 48A (60A) unless you really have a 100A circuit you’re going to use which would be overkill for probably 90% or more of people. We use our old Rivian charger at 48A and a NEMA 14-50 on a load managed circuit.

I can not imagine trickle charging a Gravity. Or any EV for that matter. But, I’ve driven 22,000+ miles in a year, so YMMV.
