2024 Lucid Air Touring
Looking for some advice from the community.

I recently picked up a 2024 Lucid Air Touring and can't get it to charge from my Tesla Universal Wall Connector.

Here's what I've tried:

  • Tesla Universal Wall Connector is set to Charge All.
  • Using the Lucid NACS adapter.
  • Plugging in results in the wall connector going blue → green → blue, then charging stops and the Lucid reports that charging was interrupted.
  • The car does charge successfully using the included 120V mobile charger.
  • The car also charged successfully at a ChargePoint station.
This makes me think the issue is either with the Tesla Universal Wall Connector, the adapter, or a compatibility/firmware issue.

Has anyone run into this? If so, what ended up fixing it? I'm also considering trying a Tesla Supercharger with the same adapter to help narrow down whether the problem is the home charger or something else.

I've already opened a case with Lucid support but haven't heard back yet beyond an acknowledgment that responses are delayed.

@marqie I noticed that the Lucid store's description of the OP's NACS to CCS adapter does not clearly state that it isn't the correct unit for home charging. It mentions DC charging only, but I'd imagine that most people who are coming from Tesla, and who aren't electrical engineers, would have no idea that home charging is AC rather than DC. They've been sheltered from that intricacy.

Lucid Store:

"Compatibility
Please note this adapter is designed exclusively for use with NACS DC fast chargers and is not compatible with any AC chargers. Use with any charger other than NACS DC may result in damage or pose safety risks."

My suggestion:

"Compatibility
Please note this adapter is designed exclusively for use with NACS DC fast chargers and is not compatible with any AC chargers, including home charging. Use with any charger other than NACS DC may result in damage or pose safety risks."
 
So I'm very new to EV's, so I'm not up on all the lingo.

When I was at Lucid and explained I had a Tesla Universal Wall Connector installed in my garage, I was handed the NACS to CCS1 adapter. You're saying I was handed the wrong adapter? If the NACS->CCS1 adapter isn't for my Tesla Wall Connector, what exactly IS it for? Supercharging stations?

I suppose I'll purchase the Lucid adapter for use in my garage with the wall connector. https://store.lucidmotors.com/nacs-to-J1772-charging-adapter/

Yes, exactly correct, on both questions.
Lucid's adapter is the best choice.

As DeaneG pointed out, you are correct in your assumptions.

There are 3 types of charging. Level 1 just means plugging into a normal wall outlet, same outlet you'd plug a lamp into. Very slow (about 4 miles of charge per hour)
Level 2 is still AC charging, and the Tesla charger you have is Level 2. These are the EV chargers that can be installed in your home, or a hotel or restaurant. They max at 19.2kw (about 40 miles per hour) but most are a bit less than that.
Level 3 is DC Fast Charging (DCFC) like you find at a Supercharger or along the highway at Electrify America or something like that. Very large, powerful chargers that can be 350kw or more.

Your adapter is CCS1 which is for Level 3 charging only. The J1772 adaptor is what you need for Level 2 charging with your Tesla Wall Charger.

Yes you really should have gotten 2 different adapters, one for DC Fast Charging and one for AC L2 home charging. The Air wouldn't come with the 2nd one because Lucid doesn't know what type of home charger you have, they only know what is needed to be compatible with Tesla Superchargers.
 
Doesn't your Tesla Universal Wall Charger have the CCS built in? You have the same one I have for my previous 24 Air Touring, there is a way to pull out the plug to directly get a compatible L2 CCS plug.

Technology Connections over on YouTube did a good (albeit long) video explaining the basics of EV charging. I think the key points are to distinguish between level 1, level 2, and level 3 charging.

@illopp00 is correct, if you told Lucid that you have a universal wall connector, they'd know that you didn't need an adapter for home charging. It's built into the universal wall connector.

I don't dislike the additional text, but home charging is never considered fast charging (at least with this era of technology). The single word fast is a disqualifier whether or not you know AC or DC.

The Tesla Universal wall connector should already come with the adapter that you need. I have 2 universal wall connectors daisy chained to a 60 amp circuit in my garage and they came with adapters included.

Except a lot of people don't know that, so it needs to be spelled out.

I really do apologise for the pedantry, but the terminology is important ... the Tesla UWC has a L2 J1772 connector built in, not CCS. Looking at the charge port on the Air, J1772 is the round / upper part with five pins, for L1 or L2 charging; the CCS1 Combo connector adds the two large DC pins at the bottom for L3.

@Brian1000, do you definitely have the UWC? Or is it the previous Gen3 wall connector, which is NACS only? If you do have the UWC, there's a handy gif in this article showing how to use the J1772 adaptor. Also congrats on the Air!

It'll be nice when all of this J1772/CCS/AC/DC nomenclature is behind us, and there will only be "slow" and "fast" charging.
DC charging can be "slow" and "home" too, such as by DC bidirectional V2X EVSEs from Dcbel, Sigenergy, Wallbox, soon Enphase, and others.

@Spin Doctor - The link to the animated gif solved my issue. I had no idea that there was an attachment buried in the Tesla universal wall connector. Sure enough, when I pulled the adapter out, the Lucid charges perfectly. How embarrassing.

Now I'm back to futzing around with my solar system to try and optimize daytime charging without pulling from the grid.
