I'm not excited by these hypermiling games. The first few times, it was cool to see all the tricks pulled to improve driving efficiency. But it's all so far removed from real world driving that it just seems irrelevant these days.

My impression is that it is a little more complicated than that. You're right about the physics being understood, but manufacturers do have to report a range that complies with the EPA's procedures for calculating it.
