I do not believe you can unplug while the Air is locked. However, what you could do is unlock the remotely Air using your phone's app, so someone else can unplug, and then use the app to then lock your Air again.

@ashar56 in addition to the above, I had to try a few different USB sticks. I followed the process but some sticks (older?) just would not work. I could see music files when docked in my Mac, but the car wouldn't read. So, try different sticks, following the process as well.

My real world lifetime range is 354 miles for Touring (20" wheels) @ 3.85 m/KW, and I have elevation. The only time my range depletes is during the summer where I have to crank up the A/C. I think heat & A/C are major factors in "real world" range (as well as elevation, wind, driving style...
