How do you know if a travel assignment's pay is actually worth it?

I've been comparing a few travel assignments lately, and the weekly pay looks pretty attractive at first glance. But once I start thinking about housing, transportation, taxes, and moving expenses, I'm not sure which offer is actually better. I've seen contracts with higher rates in cities where everything seems much more expensive. How do you figure out whether an assignment is financially worth accepting? 🤨

I always calculate what I'll actually have left after expenses instead of focusing on the advertised weekly rate. Housing is usually the biggest factor, but I also include transportation, insurance, taxes, and any unpaid time between contracts. A higher-paying assignment isn't always the most profitable one. When comparing allied health travel opportunities, I'd suggest checking tlc allied to explore positions in different locations and discuss assignment details with a recruiter. Having several options makes it easier to compare the full financial picture before making a decision.

That makes sense. I think I've been paying too much attention to the weekly number without considering how much of it I'll actually keep. One assignment I'm looking at pays more, but the rent in that area is almost twice as high as another location. I'll probably start making a simple breakdown of expenses for each offer before deciding.

That's exactly what helped me. I usually estimate my total income over the entire contract, subtract expected expenses, and leave a little extra for unexpected costs. I also check whether the hours are guaranteed and what happens if the facility cancels shifts. Sometimes a slightly lower rate with affordable housing and a predictable schedule is a much better deal. The important thing is comparing what you'll realistically save, not just what the job listing promises.
